The Department profile

The Department of Railway Transport is a part of the Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communications. Provides teaching of profiling disciplines in the field of study transport - study program railway transport (bachelor's degree, engineering degree, full-time and part-time), as well as selected disciplines of other study programs of the Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communications of the University of Žilina. These are mainly disciplines focused on the technology, management and economics of rail and intermodal transportation activities.

The staff of the department provides teaching of profiling disciplines, namely railway transport and transportation processes (including their modeling), economics and railway transport management. In addition, the department also provides teaching of intermodal transportation, logistics, the handling with materials in transport, goods knowledge - packaging and packaging technology, freight forwarding, environmental aspects of transport and others.

The Department of Railway Transport has its own modern transport laboratory with an extensive model track (total length of the tracks is 150 m). The department operates a multimedia computer classroom, which provides teaching of subjects focused on the management of transport and transportation processes with the support of multimedia applications and simulation programs.

In addition to providing teaching, supervision of diploma and bachelor's theses, the members of the department are actively involved in research projects, grants, both domestic and foreign, and also participate in professional events, internships and teacher mobility abroad. The professor and associate professors at the department also work as supervisors in doctoral studies (third degree university studies) at the faculty in the study programs transport engineering and technology, transport services and sectoral and cross-sectional economics. The department cooperates with universities at home and abroad, as well as with organizations from practice.

The department publishes the scientific journals Transport Technic and Technology, which is published twice a year, and Horizons of Railway Transport, which is published once a year.
